ABOUT SurfWAP
SurfWAP was developed by surfers, for surfers. The aim is to provide customers with timely, convenient and easy access to daily surf conditions.
Growing up in the northern suburbs of Sydney in the early 80’s, the only insight into daily surf conditions was the morning and/or afternoon surf report on Triple M. If you missed the reports, that was it. In most cases, it was a case of potluck – we’d make the 45-minute drive with expectation often turning to disappointment.
Fast-forward to the age of the internet and we now have web sites to check reports, forecasts and web cams. This is great, but not really convenient: you have to have access to the PC – spoiling any impromptu sessions.
Next development is SMS messaging offered by some of the web sites. Improves the convenience, but not really user-friendly. I tried one service and got no response. I then thought, I wonder if the message I have to send is case sensitive. Turned out it is, but had the code wrong. The reply suggested I SMS my state – which I did and then got a response with the codes for the various beach reports. So I then sent a third message and finally got a very summarised report – remember an SMS is only 160 characters.
So, $1.65 later (3 messages at 0.55c premium SMS rate), I got a summarised surf report. And if I’m travelling or want to check out other options, I need to know the exact codes to send (as well as the number). Stuff that!
SurfWAP overcomes all of that. It’s available when you want, where you want - all from your mobile phone. If that’s not convenient, I don’t know what is! So give it a try and let us know what you think.
By the way, I now live on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, so while the action is a lot closer, I still find the internet inconvenient. And I still hate making the drive only to find conditions flat – even if it is only 5 minutes!!
